MacOptimizer 1.3 is now available as a free update!

MacOptimizer 1.3 adds new features and fixes a few minor bugs. The new features include:

Clean Font Caches – As you use fonts on your Mac, your computer stores font data in a cache file to make future access quicker. Over time, a font cache can become corrupted causing obvious character flaws, such as strange symbols in place of normal characters, overlapping characters, or other text related issues. When this occurs you can usually fix the font problems by cleaning your font cache.

Verify Checksums for Disk Images – Whenever you open a disk image (DMG file) your Mac will verify the integrity of the disk image before mounting it on your computer. Depending on the size of the disk image, this verification process can take a few seconds, a few minutes, or much longer. You can greatly reduce the amount of time it takes to mount a disk image by turning this option off in MacOptimizer. In most cases, turning this off will work great since a disk image could not be created in the first place if there was data corruption. Also, if there was data corruption in the disk image, it still would not mount because it cannot read the data in the disk image, you would get an error message regardless.

MacOptimizer 1.3 also fixes several minor bugs. The complete list of features and bug fixes include:

Added Free Cache feature: Clean Font Caches.

Added System Tweaks feature: Verify Checksums For Disk Images.

Moved ‘Clean up the “Open With” menu’ option from System Tweaks to Optimization.

Bug Fix: Fixed Running Programs window bug in Free Cache.

Bug Fix: Fixed ‘Update Prebinding’ bug where it was not working properly with Operation Queue.

Bug Fix: Fixed memory leaks.

Bug Fix: Other minor fixes.

Current MacOptimizer users can update by selecting Check for Updates… from the MacOptimizer menu.

When it comes to purging your cache, it gets the job done in a quick and quiet fashion. In three clicks, one of your three system cache folders can be cleaned, or all of them at once.

Just got a very nice review on MacOptimizer by Mac.AppStorm!

They gave it 8/10 and said the following:

“MacOptimizer’s headlining feature is quick cleanup. When it comes to purging your cache, it gets the job done in a quick and quiet fashion. In three clicks, one of your three system cache folders can be cleaned, or all of them at once. The same goes for your font cache, which may also include Adobe and Microsoft elements.

Let me just say this about freeing the cache: it’s fast. I’ve never had over a gigabyte of temporary files removed from my system so fast. I was glad to see that I could continue my work within seconds of starting the cleanup process.

The app’s approach to optimizing things is, above all, user friendly. In the Free Cache tab lie two short paragraphs of documentation telling the user why they need the feature, how it works, and how to use it. Typically, that’s something the user has to infer or learn by a tedious tutorial’s means. And for cleaning the caches, MacOptimizer even warns that there’s no reason to run this cleanup too often. It’s nice to see that there’s another, less distracting approach to providing people with a way of understanding an app’s functions, rather than the scare tactics employed by most cleaning and optimization apps.”

You can read the full review here:

I have just updated all 54 regular fonts in the Premium Fonts collection (and subscription) to version 1.5. Aside from a few changes to meta data, the main update is the addition of kerning to all 54 fonts.

If you have no idea what I am talking about, you can see an example of the difference kerning makes in the Comicopia font below:

The top example shows the sentence using Comicopia font without any kerning. The bottom sentence includes kerning. When creating fonts, the spacing between characters is not always natural looking; many letter combinations (for example,”ow” and “wo”) tend to look further away then other letter combinations. Above, you can also see this with the uppercase “T” next to the “h” at the beginning of each sentence. By kerning fonts you can tell the font to automatically adjust the spacing between specific character combinations (also called kern pairs).

Apple supplies kerning features by default in most of its applications, and makes it easy for third party app publishers to also included kerning features. This makes adding kerning to fonts more of a bonus rather than a necessity. To kern text in TextEdit for example, highlight text then select the kern option you want by navigating the following menu option:

Format | Font | Kern

Let me know if you have any questions about the Kern feature!

I just released version 1.2 of MacOptimizer.

MacOptimizer 1.2 adds new Optimization features and enhances Desktop Genie. The new Optimization features include:

Repair Disk Permissions – If you experience problems with an application not opening, launching slowly or having problems with application plugins you may need to repair permissions. This tool is also good to run if you notice your Mac is taking longer to start up or shut down. Repair Disk Permissions only repairs files and applications that were installed using Apple’s installer package and are located on bootable volumes that have Mac OS X installed.

Empty iPhoto Trash – When you delete photos in iPhoto, the photo files are not moved to your regular Trash but iPhoto’s own Trash. The iPhoto Trash is not emptied unless you remember to do this in iPhoto, and can quickly get filled up, take up unnecessary space on your Mac and cause iPhoto to open and run slower.

MacOptimizer 1.2 also adds new file support for Desktop Genie. Desktop Genie now supports .avi file type.

Current MacOptimizer users can update by selecting Check for Updates… from the MacOptimizer menu.

Version 1.3 is in development with some additional new features and enhancements, and should be ready in December as a free update!
